International Studies

The International Studies curriculum is designed to provide students with a firm understanding of the global arena, with special reference Asia and Latin America. Students learn to integrate complex and diverse historical narratives with the study of national, regional, and global issues, and are expected to gain a critical knowledge of the global system through courses spanning a range of disciplines. International Studies places particular emphasis on the acquisition of analytical skills in such areas as: international relations, security and conflict resolution, human rights, media and communications, transnational migration, economic development and international trade, and the role of international and regional organizations.  

The guiding principle of the concentration is that understanding changes within the international arena demands a variety of disciplinary lenses. A combination of anthropology, economics, history, politics and international relations, provides students with the tools for comprehending and responding to multi-faceted global issues. By examining the effects of globalization, international and domestic conflicts, legacies of the past, the sources of inequality, human rights, and social and political structures and organizations, students are better prepared to meet the challenges of global citizenship in the twenty-first century.

International Studies Concentration student learning outcomes are:

  1. To utilize a multidisciplinary framework to identify and explain the processes by which individuals, societies and regions are interconnected
  2. To formulate questions and apply appropriate analytic tools to critically investigate regional and global issues
  3. To effectively communicate their understanding of critical regional and global issues
  4. To generate a theoretically and historically informed analysis of social phenomena within a national, regional, or international context
  5. To demonstrate and articulate an understanding of the cross-cultural representation and interpretation of societies
  6. To apply their knowledge and skills to formulate practical and ethical responses to regional and global issues
