Soka University of America is a private culturally diverse institution located in Aliso Viejo, California. The student body is comprised of approximately 60% domestic students and 40% international students with nearly 450 students pursuing undergraduate and graduate degrees. 


Soka University of America is seeking a Student Programs and Diversity Education Coordinator. Under the direction of the Director of Residential Life and Student Activities, the Coordinator will serve as a full time position and will provide inclusive services, programs, and support that engages, empowers and educates the diverse student population at Soka University of America.


The Coordinator will be focused on the growth and development of students as global citizens and will be responsible for providing a wide variety of educational, cultural and service learning programs. The Coordinator will promote and support student engagement, collaboration, activism, advocacy, leadership, team-building, and community awareness through programs. The Coordinator is responsible for advancing diversity education and cultural competence in the development, implementation, facilitation and evaluation of signature programs, diversity trainings and workshops, intercultural dialogues, and campus program partnerships.  The Coordinator will serve to co-facilitate the Alternative Spring Break service learning program. The Coordinator will work collectively with students, campus organizations and departments, in the planning and implementation of events.

The Student Programs and Diversity Education Coordinator’s specific job duties include:

  • Organizing, planning and assessing all programs and activities
  • Developing program initiatives focused on diversity and inclusion
  • Creating, scheduling and facilitating diversity and leadership trainings
  • Providing students with avenues by which to promote cultural inclusion and sensitivity
  • Planning and implementing educational programs on topics relating to multicultural competence and social justice
  • Developing policies and procedures, program development and event support for student organizations
  • Promoting programs, events, and services through the university calendar, university publications and other means of advertising
  • Collaborating with Student Affairs in planning a student diversity leadership program
  • Interacting and collaborating with students, faculty and staff to promote the goals and objectives of Student Activities
  • Supervising Student Assistants
  • Maintaining budget to include procurement and payment
  • Assisting in preparing reports, proposals, manuals, forms and other documentation as required for the Office of Student Activities
  • Other functions may be assigned as needed under the direction of the Director of Student Activities and Residential Life
  • Representing Student Activities on campus-wide committees when needed

Requirements: Evening and weekend work is required. Successful candidates will embrace a student-centered philosophy and the ability to work with a diverse student population.

Auxiliary Responsibilities: Coordinate one or more aspects of Residential Life growth and development, which may include: revision of manuals, coordination of paraprofessional staff development projects, research current issues relevant to programming and student development and other projects as assigned.

Candidates should have:

  • A Bachelor’s degree required, with a strong preference for a Master’s degree in student development, diversity or related discipline.
  • Requires a minimum of two years of directly-related job experience. Successful candidates will have experience working in student life, diversity/ multicultural areas and creating and facilitating student development programs.
  • Experience coordinating or directing collegiate level activities involving student activities aspects.
  • General knowledge of student development theories, needs and programmatic assessment, conflict resolution, group dynamics, and current issues and trends in higher education and multicultural issues.
  • Experience in supervising and training.
  • Experience in leadership development and advising student groups.
  • Proven experience in providing counseling, referrals, and crisis management.
  • Working knowledge of group dynamics and needs.
  • Strong oral, written and interpersonal communication skills. 
  • Excellent organizational, time management and leadership skills. 
  • Effective advertising skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with diverse groups of students and staff.
  • Commitment to mutual respect, service orientation, multiculturalism and diversity, community service and institutional excellence. 
  • High ethical and professional standards.
  • High proficiency in personal computer systems utilizing databases, word processing, graphics, spreadsheets, to include MS Word, MS Excel, MS Outlook and other Microsoft applications.
