Soka University of America (www.soka.edu) is searching for a colleague to serve as Director/Coordinator of our Writing Center and to teach composition and general education courses. The position is a two-year Visiting Assistant Professor in Composition and Rhetoric to begin in Fall 2013. A selective liberal arts university founded upon the principles of peace and human rights, SUA is committed to a global and inter- or multidisciplinary approach to education and aims to foster close intellectual relations between faculty members and students by encouraging mentoring on the part of the faculty. Students come from all over the world.
We seek a colleague whose area of specialty is Composition and Rhetoric, specifically Writing Center theory and practice, and who has a strong commitment to the Writing Center as an academic resource for students and faculty; a passion for undergraduate teaching; experience in teaching and advising students of diverse backgrounds; the ability to work well with faculty across the university; an interest in cultivating connections among the Writing Center, the Writing Program, and other SUA academic programs; and a continuing program of scholarly activity.
The teaching load is four classes a year and may include small first-year and advanced writing seminars, along with courses in the general education curriculum and/or a three-week research-oriented “learning cluster” seminar focused on the candidate and students’ mutual interests. The Director/Coordinator will be responsible for administering the Writing Center, providing ongoing professional development for our Writing Center specialists, assisting with the implementation of campus-wide writing assessment, and implementing new Writing Center initiatives in response to our campus’ growing needs.
The university’s beautiful campus, located in Aliso Viejo, California, is within easy access of the rich cultural offerings of both Los Angeles and San Diego.
Salary is competitive.
Qualifications: Ph.D. in Rhetoric and Composition from an accredited university or related field with specialization in Rhetoric and Composition as well as experience in Writing Center administration.
