HISTORY IN THE MAKING...
The 2008/2009 Men's soccer team consisted of 16 very dedicated young men who represented SOKA UNIVERSITY OF AMERICA with a lot of COURAGE, and PRIDE! The team began preseason double days on August 15th 2008, and finished their season with a 1 - 0 win over Cal Tech on November 6th 2008.
The team's record in 2008 was 2 wins 11 losses and 2 ties. The team was very competitive and we were in every game except two.
The Soka University of America soccer traditions that are etched in stone now are:
- No one works harder than the Lions.
- We never quit.
- We play to win but we do it the right way.
Those examples are when we played #8 in the country Holy Name University from Oakland California. We lost 0 - 1 to a team that went to the quarter finals of the NAIA championship tournament. We had a great chance to tie the game at the end when Gabriel Chagolla's shot hit the cross bar and bounced out. What a great effort from the whole team.
The other example is when we played Westminster College from Utah that has had a men's college team for over 40 years now and we tied them 1 - 1 in double overtime. The courage and determination of our players were never questioned for 120 minutes! Our final game at home versus a very determined Cal Tech team was the highlight for our season when we won 1 - 0 on a great penalty kick from Ichiro Kobayashi.
The future of Soka University of America Soccer is here and we look forward to continue with great success in 2009. Our spring season has just started in February 2009, and our focus is to get better as a team, and to start our community outreach program.
Thank you, and GO LIONS!
