Season Review
Fall 2010 Recap:
The 2010 season was a challenging campaign for the SUA Women's Soccer Team. With only 7 experienced players on the roster, many new faces had to be integrated into the team. Despite the youth and inexperience, the team showed tremendous energy and fight, embodying the Soka spirit. The team finished with a final record of 2-13-1. And even though the results were not always positive, the team continued to play with pride, courage, and grit. In many of the matches, the team was down to just a few substitutes while the opposing team had a full roster. Every last player on this team deserves the utmost respect for her never-say-die attitude.
A few players that stood out this season merit special recognition. Co-captain Ashley Okazaki kept the team competitive in every match with her consistent defense and key stops against the opposing team's best attackers. Fellow co-captain Katie Olson enjoyed her best season tending goal, making numerous saves. From the basic stops to the near-impossible, Katie's saves kept the rest of the team motivated in some tough matches. Junior Simone Barclay played magnificently all season in the mid-field, showing her competitive spirit and passion for the team. Freshman Skyler McClanahan paired with Simone in the central midfield, solidifying the defense and often starting the transition into attack.
Special mention goes to Seniors Heidi Helgerson and Erika Koizumi. Heidi always led by example, playing hard in every training session and every match. Also serving as a captain at times, Heidi was one of the cornerstones of the team through her commitment and team spirit. Coach Cano applauded Heidi as having one of the best attitudes of anyone he has ever coached. Erika was one of the most skilled players in the lineup and played her heart out for SUA. These 2 seniors will be sorely missed.
Hopefully, the team will continue to develop as new recruits come in and strengthen the core that returns in 2011.
October Update: On the women's side, this season has been tough as well. Despite their 2-10 record, our ladies have been consistently demonstrating their Soka pride, commitment and courage. "They never quit fighting," says Head Coach Cano. To highlight, Junior Simone Barclay has done exceptionally with a tireless knack of winning balls for the team. Sophomores Ashley Okazaki (mid-fielder) and Katie Olson (Goal Keeper) are also noteworthy players. Olsen makes an average of 9 saves per game to keep her team in the game. In fact, both Okazaki and Olsen are NAIA All-American candidates, which is a high honor. "The rest of our team have really pulled together as a unit and worked so hard for a win. We feel as a team that we can steal a couple more victories."-Head Coach Cano
September Update: "This team is one of the best groups I've ever coached in my 27 years because of the courage they've displayed in playing out this difficult 2010 season. It truly is a credit to all of these ladies" -Coach Cano
Our current record is 0-5-1 but the only lopsided loss so far was a 0-3 defeat, which is pretty amazing. Our top players have performed at a high level. Goal keeper Sophomore Katie Olsen has kept the team in every match. To highlight some of our outstanding performers, sophomore Ashley has been our defensive standout along with Junior Simone Barclay. The rest of the gals, (including some who have never played before), have done an outstanding job for us and have really exemplified the SUA spirit of never giving up. "I'm so proud of them." - Coach Cano
