Derrick I.M. Gilbert (aka D-Knowledge) is a Professor of Sociology as well as a poet/spoken word artist. He has published two books of poetry Catch the Fire: A Cross-Generational Anthology of Contemporary African-American Poetry and HennaMan.  He also recorded an acclaimed spoken word album entitled All That and A Bag of Words with Quincy Jones’ Qwest Records. In addition, Gilbert has performed his poetry with Grammy Award-winning and nominated artists such as:  Meshell Ndegeocello, Peter Gabriel, The Rolling Stones, Earth Wind and Fire, as well as comedy legend, Bill Cosby. Gilbert has appeared in films and on television ranging from John Singleton’s Higher Learning to the NAACP Image Awards (Fox) to multiple appearances on Showtime at the Apollo. Gilbert has also crafted speeches for such diverse luminaries as Bob Costas, Denzel Washington and former president Bill Clinton. He is currently the Artistic Director of The Amistad Arts Collective based in New Haven, Connecticut, as well being an Adjunct Instructor of Sociology at Soka University of America. His new volume of poetry will be published in the fall of 2012.
