Guitar East meets Guitar West; Guitar Masters meet Guitar Protégés
In a unique collaborative concert event, classical guitar virtuosos William Kanengiser (founder of the Los Angeles Guitar Quartet) and Shingo Fujii (Kyoto-based guitarist/composer) will join forces to show the musical bonds between Japan and the United States. They will also be joined by talented young players from the USC Thornton School of Music and the Orange County High School of the Arts, culminating in a performance of Mr. Fujii’s “Concerto de Los Angeles” with Mr. Kanengiser as soloist and Mr. Fujii conducting a 30-guitar orchestra.
The first half of the program will feature Messrs. Fujii and Kanengiser performing a classic duo by Fernando Sor, and a set of Japanese folk-melodies composed by Mr. Fujii. Each guitarist will also play solo pieces, including Cuban, Spanish and Italian works, as well as arrangements of Beatles songs. The second half will introduce the talents of local guitar students, and display the maestro’s skills as conductors. Mr. Kanengiser will conduct prize-winning players from USC in Rossini’s “La Gazza Ladra”, and Mr. Fujii will lead a group of high-schoolers from Orange County in his delightful “Air”. The finale of the concert will be the riveting “Concerto de Los Angeles”, dedicated to the three “Angels” of the guitar: Fernando Sor, Francisco Tarrega, and Léo Brouwer. Players from the USC Guitar Orchestra and OCHSA’s prize-winning “Orpheus” Ensemble will come together under the baton to accompany Mr. Kanengiser’s brilliant rendition of this exciting work.
