Kramsch, Professor Emerita, UC BerkeleyAbout the Speaker: Dr. Claire Kramsch’s area of research is applied linguistics, with emphasis on social, cultural and stylistic approaches to language study. Her presentation will be a valuable contribution to SUA’s mission about global citizenship and the importance of language learning and acquisition. She will emphasize the connection between language and culture and share her experience with cross-listing language courses with other domains of study. Dr. Kramsch will talk about her current book project, “Language as symbolic power.” About the Talk: The local vs. global manifestations of culture are prompting applied linguists to take a more political view of culture in language study than has heretofore been customary, and to build considerations of symbolic power into their theories of communicative competence (Macedo 2019, Kramsch in press). By comparing the re-entextualization and re-contextualization of two Aesop fables in different social and historical contexts, this paper reflects on culture as the de- and repoliticization of texts to serve various purposes. It draws on poststructuralist theories of communication (Blommaert, 2005), symbolic power Bourdieu 1991), and political mediation (Rancière 1998) to redefine and reconceptualize the role of culture in a politically aware foreign language education.
