This talk is oriented around three guiding questions related to the San Diego-Tijuana transfrontier metropolis. 1) How does the border impact the San Diego-Tijuana region’s economy? 2) What is causing growth in the supply chain sector over the last decade in both cities? And 3) What are the potentials for workers to organize transnationally along the supply chain in the region? The research pulls from interviews and field work observations done over the past two years with a variety of stakeholders including warehouse workers, truckers, labor organizers, customs brokers, industrial real estate developers, city planners, and representatives from chamber of commerce organizations. Potiker will focus on how the border region is being reshaped by a variety of factors including the US-China trade war, the rise of e-commerce, cost of living increases, as well as macro level shifts in the global economy. Furthermore, he will unpack how the border impacts the lives of workers who cross the border daily.

About the Speaker:
Spencer Louis Potiker holds a B.A. from California State University, Long Beach and an M.A. in Sociology from the University of California, Irvine (UCI). He is a doctoral candidate in Global and International Studies at UCI and Fellow at the Center for US-Mexican Studies at UC San Diego.
