Founders Art Gallery Opening Reception: Stone Soup
Inspired by the popular folk tale about a hungry traveler who encourages villagers to contribute their unique ingredients to a soup until it can feed the entire town, Stone Soup celebrates collective nourishment. Featuring paintings, prints, mixed media collages, sculpture, ceramics and fabric and fiber art the exhibition highlights the many ways we engage with cultural heritage, memory, the passage of time, and ancestral connection. As a meditation on shared humanity, Stone Soup examines tradition, reflects on identity, and explores the sacred nature of aging.
Stone Soup Co-Curators:
Frances DePhillips: Originally from Boise, Idaho, DePhillips earned a B.A. in Liberal Arts with a concentration in environmental studies from Soka University of America. As a curator, she is interested in the potential of art to heal individuals, communities, and ecosystems.
Shayla Rose-Brown: An artist and curator from Sebastopol, California, Rose-Brown holds a B.A. in Liberal Arts with a concentration in social and behavioral sciences from Soka University of America. She began practicing art therapy in 2020 when caring for her grandmother, who had dementia. This experience deepened her belief that art creates and solidifies connections between people of all ages.
