Study Abroad in Chinese
A classroom only gets you so far.
SUA’s Chinese study abroad programs take you the rest of the way — into the neighborhoods, universities, and daily rhythms that define Chinese language and culture. With two quintessential Chinese cities to choose from — Beijing or Shanghai — you’re set for a semester of hands-on learning and personal growth.
Chinese
Living the language is different from studying it. Both programs immerse you in Chinese culture, but each offers different language-learning intensities and accommodation options. You get to choose how — and where — you want to challenge yourself.
Beijing, China
Host institution: Capital Normal University, via CET Beijing
Requirements: 3.0 GPA
Housing: Student dormitory with a Chinese roommate
Duration: Fall Semester: Late August to mid-December; Spring Semester: Mid-February to early June
This program is the higher intensity option, intended for students seeking full immersion. With access to seven UNESCO World Heritage sites, arts institutions like the Peking Opera, and an excursion to the Great Wall, Beijing is a great base to explore Chinese culture.
Shanghai, China
Host institution: East China Normal University, via CIEE
Requirements: 2.5 GPA
Housing: Dormitory (Chinese or CIEE roommate) or homestay with a Chinese family
Duration: Fall Semester: Late August to mid-December; Spring Semester: Late February to mid-June
Shanghai offers rapid language development at a more flexible pace than Beijing. Coursework spans all proficiency levels. The city itself — museums, markets, and the Lujiazui skyline — gives you plenty to engage with outside the classroom.

My Study Abroad Experience
“I love Beijing because of countless great experiences that enabled me to love myself, my world, and the people around me.”
