On July 1, Archibald Asawa, executive vice president for finance and administration and CFO, recently began his term as treasurer and officer of the WASC Senior College and University Commission. He also became a member of the Executive Committee and chair of the Finance & Operations Committee.

“I am happy to serve in this capacity out of appreciation for the opportunity to work at SUA and to demonstrate SUA’s participation and commitment to our field of higher education,” Asawa said.

The WSCUC is an institutional accrediting agency for colleges and universities that awards bachelor’s degrees and more advanced degrees. The WSCUC is responsible for ensuring that higher ed institutions fully meet accreditation standards for governance, academic quality, financial sustainability, and student success. Equity and inclusion, evidence and improvement, and national and global reach are central to WSCUC’s strategic goals and objectives.

Asawa noted that as the headwinds in higher education intensify, institutions are increasingly facing greater challenges in both enrollment and financial sustainability, with closures and consolidations becoming more commonplace.

“Being a part of WSCUC this past year has shown me the importance of the commission’s role to ensure the integrity of higher education and provide protection for students so that they receive the quality of education promised to them,” Asawa said.
